GPS stands for Global Positioning System. This tool functions as a space-based navigation system owned by the government of the United States (US) and is operated specifically for the US Air Force.

The US Department of Defense first created the system in the 1970s using 24 satellites but did not operate fully until the 1990s. Although the device is a project operated by the US military, GPS is free to use by anyone.

Although free to use by anyone, the US can deny access or certain organizations. As a result, Russia who did not want to lose also developed a different system, GLONASS. The system is the only alternative choice that stretches across the world and offers the same precision for China, the European Union, and India.

It turns out that GPS has advantages that are not widely known by others. GPS can be used when the user is carrying out hiking or mountain climbing activities, not only having to rely on an internet connection. Portable GPS units or certain smartphone applications will show the user’s location on the map.

The GPS function can also track other people, for example finding missing children or family or even showing a pet. However, if both of them already have or have installed the navigation device.

GPS can also be used to play games that rely on location, such as the Pokemon Go game. Or if the user follows stock market information. All of this technology certainly relies on GPS to synchronize time.

The satellites that surround the world offer a great way to make sure everything is synchronized.
